It’s no mystery why you want to own a 1911. After all, it is, simply put, one of the best handguns ever made. Even today, its design is replicated, improved upon, and lauded by a following of owners a few million strong. But should you buy, or build your 1911? Let’s go over the latter – the benefits of building your own 1911!
- Building Your Own 1911 is 100% Legal
Yes, you can build a gun at home. No, you don’t need to tell anyone. You don’t even need to fill out any paperwork. Sound to good to be true? You’ve been misinformed. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms even clarifies: Yes, you can build a firearm at home.
You can’t sell it, and you can’t build it unless you’re otherwise legally allowed to own guns in your state. You should also check your local laws first – some states require you to submit paperwork for a serial number before you begin building your 1911.
See, our 1911 Build Kits aren’t technically firearms. They’re just components with a large hunk of aluminum included. That “hunk of aluminum” is your 1911’s 80%-completed frame. You must finish machining it, but trust us, it’s easy.
- Building your 1911 Requires no Experience
The process of building your 1911 from scratch can be done in a single day. Your 1911 Build Kit, Jig, and tools all ship to your front door without any paperwork or FFL. Once you receive your kit, you must machine your 80% frame to completion.
Doing this requires drilling two holes in your frame and cutting the frame rails and barrel seat. The provided 1911 80% Jig does all the setup, guiding, and machining for you. This is all accomplished using hand tools and basic measuring. Trust us, it really is so easy you can do it without any experience. Not convinced? Read all about it here, in our Guide to Building a 1911 At Home.
- Your Built 1911 Will be Better and More Affordable
Our 1911 Build Kits are not gimmicks. We don’t sacrifice quality or craftsmanship in favor of convenience or ease of install. Instead, we partnered with Stealth Arms to use the 1911’s own beautiful simplicity to make our 1911 Build Kits high-caliber and 100% made in the U.S.A while keeping things affordable.
Your 1911 Build Kit will come with a mil-spec Chromoly or 416R Stainless barrel and a next-generation forged aluminum alloy 1911 frame that weighs 60% less than its off-the-shelf steel counterparts. Inside each kit rests competition-worthy components and internals, as well as an 8-round magazine.
Our 1911 Build Kits are available in 9mm or .45 ACP Commander and Government profiles and come in a raw, bead-blasted finish or a mil-spec Type III Hardcoat Anodized finish – all yours for much less than retail cost.
- Building Your 1911 Will Make You a Better Shooter
We know, this one sounds cheesy, just hear us out (we’re not trying to sell you snake oil): Anyone can buy a top-tier 1911 off the shelf, hit the range, spend a few hundred rounds, and walk away with a few decent groupings. But it takes a true mastering of your firearm to become an intrinsically good shooter: the shooter who can clear any malfunction without conscious thought.
The shooter who can adapt to changes or uncontrollable factors and still hit his or her mark with discipline. This level of confidence requires mastering your tools. The best shooters are as comfortable and familiar with every detail of their firearm as they are their own persons. There is no better way to achieve this type of intuition and experience than by crafting your weapon – in this case, your 1911 – by hand.
